Sustainable Cork

Sustainable Cork

Cork is considered as one of the leading materials when it comes to sustainability as is a favourite with many manufacturers when making their products. For those who are unsure of what cork is, a commonly seen example is that of a wine stopper. Due to the vast number of advantages that cork has to offer, cork products are rapidly growing area within wide ranges of applications. Products made from cork are very lightweight, waterproof, and stain-resistant, due to this, cork is widely used for homeowners who are looking for eco-friendly alternatives for their furniture and homewares. If this isn’t reason enough for you to want some cork products, we have several compelling pieces of information for their advantage that you might not know of.

Water-resistant

One of the reasons corks are used as a bottle stopper and as flooring is due to it being waterproof. Even though it may appear to be soft and slightly spongey, cork contains millions of cells that contain a substance called Suberin, which is a waxy substance. It is this substance that allows the cork not to retain water within its cell walls, making it waterproof and perfect for products that may be prone to spillages.

Health and Safety

It may be surprising to hear that cork-based products are beneficial to your health. Cork is naturally anti-microbial which assures a great promise in stopping mould, mildew, termites, and other harmful insect infestations. Corks also have an antistatic surface which limits the chance of dust and toxin absorption, due to this, cork is a good choice for people with allergies. Being a great material to use around the home, cork doesn’t release dangerous organic compounds that may affect the air around your home. Cork is also slow at combusting and contains off-gas property that prevents itself from flame and heat. It takes extremely high temps for inflammation or melting to occur. During the combustion process, cork generates less smoke and chemicals than other materials such as vinyl and laminate.

Durability

Cork can be used in many ways around the home. A few examples are bathmats, coasters, flooring, and tableware. The reason for this is down the resilience of cork. Cork is resistant to cracking, abrasions and is waterproof. If properly cared for, you could expect your cork products to last at least 30 years. In addition to cork flooring products, cork can maintain its pristine form despite the weight of furniture that is placed on it, so you can assure there will be no indent marks caused by furniture over time.

Environmentally Friendly

Cork is incredibly sustainable and has little to no impact on the environment. Cork is harvested from the cork oak tree. To do this they take the bark off the tree and there is no need to chop the tree down. The tree is also ready for harvesting every 9 years, which makes cork rapidly renewable among other natural resources. Since cork is recyclable, a significant amount of carbon incorporated in this material can be delayed emitting back to the atmosphere. As cork is sustainable, cork industries find themselves in need to adopt more cork oak trees to meet the growing demand from purchasers, which indirectly creates a cycle that supports a healthier environment.
